Next time you go touring, try this concept, inspired by Caleb Merrill, the founder and host of The Avalanche Hour Podcast, which you should have in your rotation if it is not already.

As a group, perhaps in the planning phases or before you leave the parking lot (or both), each person should express what (route or type of terrain/tour) they Want to do, what kind of route/terrain they are Willing to do, and what routes or terrain they Won't do. Don't wait until you are already touring, because that's when the human factors and lure of pristine powder will more heavily bias these desires.

I think explicitly expressing what you want in addition to what you are willing to do is a powerful tool to put your motivations on the proverbial table. We use the concept of what we won't ride in other ways, but I also think it even gains more power by adding what terrain you want to and are willing to engage with on a given day.
