Session #6. Live from Cripple Creek Backcountry, Tips for Spring Skiing, The State of the Snowpack & The Transistion to Spring.
That was fun! Thanks to all who showed up last night at Cripple Creek Backcountry, and thanks y'all for being bringing so many great questions!
A few quick thoughts. We're not in full spring conditions yet. Winter is hanging on. Some areas have started to shed a bit, but there is still a lot of snow hanging on in steep terrain, especially at upper elevations, and lots of cornices out there, so stay aware of what's overhead. The 4 weather inputs (Radiation, Temperature, Wind, and Precip) will continue to drive both snow conditions (quality) and avalanche hazard, so stay tuned into those every day, but especially as avalanche forecasts wind down. Radiation (related to aspect, slope angle, and sky cover) take on more significance in the spring, so give those variables even more attention.
